All About Sheet Masks

Who doesn’t love sheet masks? They are relaxing, nourishing and incredibly easy to use! They add an extra boost of hydration to your current skincare routine when you need it the most (or when you just feel like pampering yourself). Here is everything you need to know about sheet masks, from their benefits and why you should consider including them in your own routine.

Origin

Legend has it that the Japanese Geishas, ancient female entertainers renowned for their beauty, first invented sheet masks hundreds of years ago! They would soak the scraps of silk leftover from making kimono gowns in flower water and then rest them on their faces. The process now has just been simplified! Although sheet masking originated in Japan, it’s become an essential step in about any Korean skincare routine.

Benefits

Sheet masks are among the most popular type of masks due to their lightweight packaging, quick hydration boosts and easy application as well as removal. They are essentially a cloth (or sheet) deeply infused with serum or essence to give you an immediate boost of moisture. Certain masks can even address specific skincare concerns, depending on what you need at a time.

How To Use

  1. Cleanse your face thoroughly (now is a good time to exfoliate too).
  2. Apply a toner to remove all remaining impurities and prep your skin.
  3. Put the sheet mask on your face and smooth out air bubbles to ensure contact with the skin (yes, you’ll look like Slenderman but that’s okay).
  4. Let it sit for 15 minutes. Grab a book, scroll through your phone, watch a series… Relax! It is recommended to lie down on your back for optimal results. If you want to be extra, place two cucumber slices on your eyes while you’re at it. Sheet masks aren’t supposed to be longer on your face than 20 minutes at most unless indicated otherwise. Why? Because it will start to dry up and take all the hydration with it, leaving your skin dry again.
  5. Remove the mask and throw it away. Don’t wash your face after, but rather pat the remaining product into your skin for better absorption and let it soak for a bit.
  6. Apply eye cream and moisturizer to help maximize its benefits.
